Important Changes To Canadian Citizenship Rules

Important changes to Canadian citizenship rules, including how long a newcomer has to be in the country to be eligible, will take effect next week, ( October 11,) Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen announced Wednesday, October 04, 2017. The main changes are the following:
Physical presence in Canada is 3 years out of the last 5 years prior to the application date
Only applicants from age 18-54 are required to write the test and provide proof of language
Applicants to count half the time they have spent in Canada to a maximum of one year, meaning that once they become permanent residents, they would only need to be in the country for an additional two years to apply for citizenship 4-under implementation of Bill C-6. Permanent residents will now be allowed to go abroad to study, work, or for family reasons for more than 183 days without losing access to citizenship eligibility.
